Our undergraduate majors continue to achieve great things within academia and the broader community, post graduation.  Our former students are among those pursuing doctorate degrees at top schools throughout the nation.  Some have assumed leadership roles and academic positions at various colleges, universities and other institutions.  All have benefited from our departmental mission that seeks to produce the next generation of psychologists and other professionals from diverse backgrounds who are culturally competent and prepared to meet the global challenges of the 21st century.

Kallie Brown (Class of 2017)

Kallie Brown received a B.S. in Psychology from Howard University in Spring 2017. While studying at Howard, Kallie conducted research on the effects of parent-adolescent communication on academic achievement in African-American students under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Debra Roberts. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on examining how positive racial/ethnic identities are developed and sustained despite oppressive structures for African-Americans and Afro-Latinos in the U.S. Read the Article

Undergraduate and Graduate Alumni

Dr. Yzette Lanier (BS Psychology, PhD Developmental, Howard) is a developmental psychologist and Assistant Professor at New York University's (NYU) Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Prior to her appointment at NYU, she completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at CDC and the Center for Health Equity Research at the University of Pennsylvania. Broadly, her research seeks to improve the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults. For the past 10 years, her work has focused on reducing HIV/STIs among Black and Latino youth. She currently serves as PI of a $1.2 million CDC-funded study which examines relationship dynamics and use of HIV prevention methods among young Black and Latino heterosexual couples. This work will inform the development of a couple-based intervention to enhance uptake of combination HIV prevention methods.
